ELSA GUILLAUME
Overview
Born in Carpentras (FR) in 1989. Lives and works in Brussels.
From drawing to sculpture, installation and video, Elsa Guillaume's artistic research focuses on representations of the maritime world. A graduate of the Beaux-Arts of Paris in 2013 and a diver since 2011, her work brings together her passion for the sea, drawing and ceramics. Her practice alternates studio work, where she models clay, with time spent traveling and researching in the terrain, where she auscultates natural environments through sketches and photography.
Her adventurous spirit led her to many experiences abroad, cultivating her taste for research and artistic techniques. This is how she came to visit Asia on several occasions, where she familiarized herself with porcelain traditional techniques. Then, in 2016, she embarked on the schooner TARA, which conducts scientific expeditions at sea. In 2019, she also spent some time in Brittany, where she took an interest in scientific research at the Roscoff Biological Station. In 2021, she is invited to take up a residency at La Corderie Royale in Rochefort, where the city's maritime past inspires her to produce new pieces. Her latest creations have been presented at the gallery in the group show 'Young Belgium, Opus II: Fiction(s)', conceived as the culmination of this time spent working in the area.
Since 2019, Elsa Guillaume has based her studio in Brussels, where she produces drawings, sculptures and installations. These works are regularly exhibited in France and abroad in group and solo shows, and have won several awards, including the COAL prize for art and the environment.
