Olga De Amaral|
The Light of Spirit
30.03.18 > 16.06.18 | Espace Grande Nef
The Patinoire Royale–Galerie Valérie Bach becomes, for one exhibition, the temple of the Amerindian spirit and its powerful spiritual charge, in direct link with the cosmos, through the timeless work of the Colombian artist Olga de Amaral. This unclassifiable artist and her production, whose eternal force is haloed with gold -a glorious and divine stainless material- characterizes her mode of expression. A selection of some forty exceptional works, which cover the last 15 years, are presented here for the first retrospective in Belgium.
Her luminous work re-explores the textile tradition of South America by directly quoting the colors, shapes, graphics and materials of the pre-Columbian world, using gold or silver leaf, as well as the natural pigments of the world: indigo, amaranth, turquoise, and earth-colors, in a vast firework display against a backdrop of Andean music.
Zorka Ságlová & Agnès Thurnauer

Sur une proposition de Nadine Gandy
The exhibition "Reconnaissances" (recognitions) is conceived around the notion of the double. It is the meeting of two contemporary artists who, without knowing each other, have long led parallel lives: one in Paris, one in Prague. Singular and similar, the artistic paths of Zorka Ságlová and Agnès Thurnauer were built in different contexts. They grew up on opposite sides of a divided Europe, one generation separates them, yet they belong to a common world.
What binds the two women is stronger than what separates them. Agnes Thurnauer understood this from the outset, when she discovered a few years ago the work of the Czech artist. The exhibition’s title "Recognitions" evokes precisely this form of identification with the other, through the pictorial gesture in this case. "Recognition" in the plural, because it is also about celebrating the late notoriety of Zorka Ságlová. Forced to remain in the shadows for decades, she is now considered a major artist.

We are divers held in the moment of contact with the water’s surface. These works carry all the momentum of a fall as well as the cool stillness of the water’s depth. Antoine Wagner captures the warmth and melancholy of years passing as well as nature's timeless cycle. The contemplative mystery of these works recalls the sublime adventure of painters like Friedrich and Turner whilst driving forward into a visceral abstraction akin to Turrell. In every image there is a seductive sense of the half open curtain into our memories or dreams. A surface to be broken through. And on the other side of this silence emerges a perfect music so finely crafted and yet somehow capable of carrying the untouched purity of nature’s breaking waves, soft rain and trickling streams. It is a silent music that points to both the raindrop on a rose petal and the planets softly waltzing through space.
